Creatine plays an important role in the energy metabolism of every cell. Like a battery, creatine stores, recycles and regulates energy in the form of creatine phosphate, making it immediately available when needed. When our body needs energy, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is converted into ADP (adenosine diphosphate). In order for ADP to be recycled back into ATP, energy from food is used. However, it takes some time before the body can access this energy supply from food. In addition, cells can only store a very small amount of energy in the form of ATP. Creatine phosphate fills this gap until other energy-supplying processes are triggered. The enzyme creatine kinase transfers the phosphate group from creatine phosphate to ADP, which re-forms ATP.

Creatine is found in significant quantities only in foods of animal origin. Plants do not contain creatine. Herring, for example, contains a comparatively high content of creatine – from 6 to 10 grams per kilogram, followed by cod (5 g/kg), salmon (4 g/kg) and tuna (4 to 6.5 g/kg). One kilogram of pork contains 5 grams of creatine, and beef contains 4.5 grams of creatine per kilogram. The creatine content in cow's milk is quite low, less than 0.1 grams per kilogram.
