Creatine plays an important role in the energy metabolism of every cell. Like a battery, creatine supplies, recycles and regulates energy in the form of creatine phosphate, making it immediately available when needed. When our body needs energy, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is converted to ADP (adenosine diphosphate). In order for ADP to be recycled back into ATP, energy from food is used. However, it takes some time before the body can access this energy supply from food. Furthermore, cells can only store very little energy in the form of ATP. Creatine phosphate fills this gap until other energy supply processes kick in. The enzyme creatine kinase transfers the phosphate group from creatine phosphate to ADP, which again forms ATP.

Creatine is found in significant amounts only in foods of animal origin. Plants do not contain creatine. Herring, for example, contains a comparably high creatine content of 6 to 10 grams per kilogram, followed closely by cod (5 g/kg), salmon (4 g/kg) and tuna (4 to 6.5 g/kg). One kilogram of pork contains 5 grams of creatine, while beef contains 4.5 grams of creatine per kilogram. The creatine content in cow's milk is quite low, less than 0.1 grams per kilogram.
